Coaching Special Olympics Basketball Has Been One Of The Best Experiences Of My Life
This winter I had the opportunity to help coach a Special Olympics basketball team. With the season soon coming to a close, I must say that this has been one of the best experiences I’ve ever had in my life. It’s hard to describe it in words, but I’ll try as best I can. If you have never been to a Special Olympics event, you are missing something truly special. These kids bring nothing but smiles to your face. Every Wednesday I got to go to practice and help teach the game of basketball to this special team. We would teach the basics including dribbling, passing, shooting, and playing defense. Seeing the progress that each player made from week to week was awesome. What I loved about the games is that there was no yelling. There were no benchwarmers. There was no “winner.” Everyone was a winner. The crowd, coaches, and players would cheer when either team did something good, not just their own. I got so happy when anyone on our team scored that I jumped up and down cause I was so happy and proud of them. Last night, our team had a season ending party and everyone received a trophy. I couldn’t stop smiling as each player walked up and received their trophy. I almost started to cry I was so proud. I loved my team and I worked with wonderful fellow coaches. I’m so grateful for this opportunity. This is why I love sports. Its not just a game, but an experience. And this was a great experience. One of the best of my life.
